More About the Creative Arts

*Art therapy utilizes various materials: paintspencil, pastels, etc. to explore emotional responses that are not otherwise brought to the surface with talk therapy. These exercises can be structured  assignments or spontaneous creations that you develop in the course of your sessionYour outcomes will be a better self awareness and an improved ability to identify and express your emotional responses.

*Music therapy can include CDs or various instruments that allow a better expression of your emotions in therapy when you're not able to verbalize what you're feelingWe all know what it's like to know what it's like to be touched by a song that brings up feelings we thought we could no longer feel. This can be very helpful when your feelings seem out of reach, but still need to be explored. Your outcomes will be an improved self awareness and an improved ability to identify and express your emotions.

*Psychodrama is a form of therapeutic acting or role playing most commonly used in group therapy, however, the basic concepts may be applied to individual therapy. Acting out unresolved relationship issues that are keeping you stuck can help you see areas for growth and allow you to develop needed social skills in a safe environment. This type of role playing can also help you learn to express emotions or personal issues you have avoided. Your outcomes will be improved self awareness, an improved ability to identify and express your emotions, and a development of better relationship skills.

It's important to remember that you don't have to be an artist, musician, or an actor to benefit from these techniques. It's about the process and what it exposes. You may discover things about yourself that are surprising and that can lead to real personal growth. Why don't you give it a try?
